What's the difference between brand mentions and backlinks?

Backlinks are hyperlinks from one site to another, primarily designed to influence Google rankings. Brand mentions are references to your business in conversations, threads, listicles, and discussion content (often without a link). For AI visibility, mentions matter more than backlinks. AI systems learn what brands to trust through multi-source co-occurrence, which mentions create and backlinks alone don’t.
